Simon Fraser University

A creative solutions under pressure

The challenge

  • Tasked with designing a 16-20 page brochure and creating motion graphics for a promotional video.
  • Required an animated flyover of Canada, zooming into SFU’s three campuses.
  • Faced tight deadlines and no prior experience with motion graphics.

The solution

Proposed a helicopter shoot to capture aerial footage of the campuses, which could:

  • Replace the animation with stunning, real-world visuals.
  • Provide high-quality images for the brochure.
  • Enrich the university’s image library for future marketing use.

The execution

  • Coordinated with helicopter companies, photographers, and videographers to arrange the shoot and negotiate costs.
  • Developed a detailed proposal that gained approval from leadership.
  • Collaborated with the staff videographer to produce a seamless flyover sequence for the video.
  • Worked closely with a writer to ensure the brochure was polished, cohesive, and on-brand.

The results

  • Delivered an engaging and visually stunning promotional video.
  • Produced a professional brochure that exceeded expectations.
  • Provided valuable aerial images that became assets for SFU’s broader marketing efforts.

Takeaway

Demonstrated resourcefulness under pressure, the ability to pivot to creative solutions, and a commitment to collaboration and excellence.
